While in Iraq, we would be asked: "Why are you here?" We'd answer, "We're here for the children." And, you know. . ., it is true. We were there to help the Iraqi children have the potential of a better future than what their parents experienced under Sadamn. We were also there to ensure our own children did not have to face the scourage of terrorism that is our generation's fight--as much as the scourage of Nazism, was my father's generation's fight.
Unfortuantely war leaves children fatherless and motherless. Who stands up in their place to care for them in their personal battles as their parent(s) stood and fought the hot war?
Shamu and I looked around and realized there are many charities to choose among. The one we like is the Freedom Alliance ( www.freedomalliance.org ). The Freedom Alliance supports these children who've given up so much. The Freedom Alliance provides scholarships and other forms of outreach to help the children of fallen servicemembers.
From the website:
The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund honors the bravery and dedication exhibited by Americans in our armed forces who have sacrificed life and limb by providing educational scholarships to their children. Students are eligible if they are the dependent child of an active duty service member who died or was permanently disabled (100% rating) in the line of duty, or who is currently certified as POW or MIA. The applicant must also be a senior in high school, a high school graduate, or enrolled in an institution of higher learning, including colleges, universities, or vocational schools. (See application form and scholarship rules for complete eligibility details.)
